Do you want to learn how to efficiently paddle using a traditional "skinny stick"?
Trying to learn to roll or finally perfect that forward finishing hand roll? Always wanted to throw a harpoon or paddle a traditional skin-on-frame qajaq? TRAQS is the event for you whether you're just starting or you're an advanced paddler.
TRAQS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to spread the joy, benefits and cultural aspects of Greenland paddling in Florida. We adhere to the Greenlandic and QajaqUSA principles of mentoring and sharing our passion, skills and knowledge.
TRAQS 2024 will happily take place again at the Lake Placid Camp and Conference Center May 2-5, 2024.
This will be our 8th annual immersive Greenland kayaking weekend that includes paddling and rolling skills, presentations, morning yoga, kayak games, exposure to Inuit culture and of course our auction with items generously contributed by businesses, mentors and participants to help sustain this event.
We have our best roster of Guest Mentors since the inception of TRAQS. We are very excited to announce that Abel Jakobsen will be joining us as a Special Guest Mentor at TRAQS in May. Abel and his wife Sofie Rosa (Sorpa) reside in Qaqortoq, Greenland. Abel has been a Qaannat Kattuffiat board member since 2013 and is the first QK board member to serve for ten consecutive years. See the Special Guest section of the website for more details.
We're also very excited that the terrific Alison Sigethy, Tim Gallaway and Joanne Barta will return. Greg Stamer will join us again to teach his famous strokes and maneuvers classes. We are also very thankful to Pete Hohmann, Ant Sousa, Jill Lingard, Scott Jantz, and Dorsey DeMaster for contributing their skills as Mentors. We will also have the pleasure of Dorsey and Alison’s fantastic yoga and stretching sessions.
To top it all off, Don Beale will once again lead a paddle making class. In addition to his skills as a Mentor, Don is famous as a paddle maker and owner of Don Beale Paddles. Don will lead the paddle making class on Friday, May 2.
TRAQS is also a terrific opportunity to meet other kayakers. Join us in a warm (temperature and atmosphere) and nurturing environment. Enjoy the camaraderie while learning and sharing kayaking techniques and skills.
Whether you are local to Florida, or are looking for a personal or family winter get-away, this event, modeled after The Delmarva Paddlers Retreat, offers a paddler a wonderful weekend of enjoyment.
Come join us and be a part of a growing paddling community.
We will follow relevant CDC Guidelines regarding COVID-19 for TRAQS 2024. A resurgence in the virus may require changes to protect the health and safety of our participants. Given our general demographic and the close nature of rolling instruction, we think this is the prudent path to take to keep everyone safe.
